A fire broke out in a cowshed at Mugdam Mohalla of Chottipura village in north Kashmir’s Langate, Handwara area on Sunday morning , causing panic among residents of the densely populated locality.

Locals said that the fire is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit from a nearby electric pole, following which flames quickly engulfed the structure and threatened adjoining houses. Villagers immediately raised an alarm and sought assistance.

Indian Army personnel stationed in Langate reached the spot immediately and initiated firefighting measures using fire extinguishers and a water bowser, helping to contain the blaze until the Handwara Fire Brigade arrived and joined the operation. “Indian Army’s quick action ensured the fire did not spread to nearby homes,” a local resident said.
While no loss of life or injuries were reported, officials confirmed that the cowshed along with stored grass and fodder was completely destroyed. Residents expressed relief over the timely intervention by Indian Army, which prevented what could have been a major fire incident in the area. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and ensure proper maintenance of electrical installations, particularly during the winter season.
