Chennai: Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) has urged the Karnataka government to speed up the process of registering the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) powered auto-rickshaws in Bengaluru.

The IAC said it has reached out to Dr NV Prasad, secretary, Transport Department, Karnataka regarding mounting challenges in the registration of new LPG autorickshaws in Bengaluru.

“We earnestly urge the Karnataka transport secretary to consider a more inclusive and rapid registration policy to help harness the full potential of ALPG in Bengaluru. This step will directly enhance urban air quality, benefit public health, and ensure economic relief for the commuting public and auto rickshaw drivers,” Suyash Gupta, Director General, IAC said.

“Auto LPG presents a win-win opportunity for cities combating air pollution and for drivers seeking cost-effective solutions,” Gupta said.

The use of automotive LPG engines results in significantly lower emissions of particulates, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, helping to drive cleaner air across urban India. In addition, ALPG is nearly 40% cheaper than petrol and delivers superior mileage advantages that make it both a sustainable and economically viable choice for the city’s auto drivers and commuters, IAC said.

Requesting the Karnataka government to revisit its restrictive vehicle registration approach, the IAC suggested the state to consider a policy model similar to that implemented in Hyderabad, which has facilitated faster and more inclusive registration of auto LPG vehicles and stimulated broader demand.

IAC represents a wide spectrum of stakeholders within the auto LPG value chain including public sector oil industry, private LPG marketers, kit suppliers, and equipment manufacturers.
