Bengaluru: Amid mounting tensions over Kamal Haasan’s controversial remarks on the Kannada language, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) on Thursday expressed willingness to hold dialogue with the veteran actor to resolve the row and facilitate the release of his upcoming film ‘Thug Life’ in the state.

The controversy erupted following Haasan’s comments at the audio launch of ‘Thug Life’, where he linked the roots of Kannada to Tamil. Several Kannada groups and the KFCC demanded a public apology, sparking protests and threats of disruption to the film’s Karnataka release. The matter soon reached the courts.

In a recent hearing, the judge observed that Haasan’s statements had stirred cultural sensitivities and questioned the basis of his linguistic claim. While acknowledging the ₹300-crore scale of the film, the court opined that an apology could help defuse tensions. Kamal Haasan, however, submitted a clarification stating his remarks were misinterpreted and not intended to undermine Kannada, but stopped short of an apology.

The court, noting the absence of a formal apology and the prevailing unrest, stayed the film’s release in Karnataka and adjourned the matter to June 10, allowing Haasan’s legal team to seek rescheduling.

In a significant development, KFCC president Narasimmalu said the chamber remained open to peaceful discussions with Haasan. “We acknowledge Kamal Haasan’s contribution to Indian cinema and his considerable fanbase in Karnataka. We are keen to resolve the issue amicably and ensure ‘Thug Life’ releases smoothly,” he stated.

While protests continue in parts of the state, the KFCC’s gesture has sparked hopes of a truce. All eyes are now on the June 10 court proceedings and any further engagement between Haasan and Kannada film bodies.
