Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday while accusing the Samajwadi Party of nurturing and harbouring criminals said that his government would destroy the mafia in the state.

The CM remarks came after Leader of Opposition Akhilesh Yadav raised the Prayagraj issue where Umesh Pal, the main witness in former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, and his gunner were killed in an attack in Dhumanganj area on Friday evening.

During discussion on vote of thanks on Governor Anandiben Patel joint address on the first day of the budget session, Akhilesh raised the issue and said that the manner in which the main witness, who was also an advocate and his security guard were killed was failure on the part of intelligence.

Replying to this the CM said that the Prayagraj incident was sad and the government has taken cognizance of the incident. He assured the house that no mafia would be allowed to flourish in the state.

Describing the Prayagraj incident as sad, CM Yogi said that the government has taken cognizance of it and that the results of his government’s policy of zero tolerance towards crime would be visible very soon.

Hitting out at the main opposition party SP, Yogi said that the party has been nurturing mafias and the main accused in this case too became a Member of Parliament on a SP ticket. “Is it not true that the accused against whom the FIR has been lodged was made an MP by SP? You will nurture and patronise the criminals, garland them and then blame others when a crime takes place. By doing this, you are just making a spectacle of yourself.”

Without taking Atique Ahmed, he said that he is a mafia supported by the SP and has been punished for his criminal acts by the current government.

Taking a dig at Akhilesh, Yogi said, “You needed an excuse for your misdeeds. They have been patronizing the mafia and criminals continuously. Crime runs in their veins. They haven’t learnt anything except crime. The whole state knows this and today, they have come to give clarification.”

He said that the mafia who has carried out this act is currently out of UP. He said that the accused became an MLA from Allahabad West in 1996 and an MP in 2004 and 2009 with the support of SP.

Raising objections over the CM’s remarks the SP members led by Akhilesh came into the well and raised slogans. On this occasion, Speaker Satish Mahana asked the SP members to return to their benches while pointing out that the Leader of the House was speaking.

The CM said that those found guilty in the Prayagraj incident will not be spared. “Who nurtured the mafia and professional criminals? Why is the Leader of the Opposition so troubled with this?,” he said.
