Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday urged voters to exercise their franchise in record numbers as the single-phase Lok Sabha polls began at 7 am on Friday.
“I drove myself to the polling station this morning with the hope of casting my vote, but I was surprised that electorates had already lined up. I am in line to cast my vote at 6:30 am. I urge every citizen to come out and exercise their democratic right,” Conrad posted in X, formerly Twitter.
Sitting Congress MP Vincent, who is seeking re-election for the fourth consecutive term, was the first voter among the six candidates from Shillong Lok Sabha seats to cast his vote in Lamyrsiang—Polling Station under Sutnga Saipung assembly constituency.
The BJP, a constituent of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, is supporting the National People’s Party (NPP’s) nominees Agatha Sangma for the Tura seat and lone woman cabinet minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh in the Conrad Sangma ministry for the Shillong seat.
