New York: Naomi Osaka’s eyes glistened with tears of joy as she clinched a stirring victory at the US Open, marking her first triumph at the tournament since 2021. The Flushing Meadows spectators roared in approval as the former champion outplayed 2017 French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko in a gripping opening-round match of the US Open 2024.

This win is not just a return to form but Osaka’s first top-10 victory in four years on the iconic New York courts.

Dressed in a vibrant green ensemble adorned with playful bows, Osaka radiated both elegance and determination. Her performance was a showcase of her powerful game, as she unleashed a barrage of 19 dazzling winners, including nine aces, while maintaining just five unforced errors. The precision of her serves and the ferocity of her shots left Ostapenko scrambling.

Osaka, who celebrated her first Grand Slam win at the US Open in 2018 and again in 2020, was deeply moved by the experience. After missing last year’s event due to the birth of her daughter Shai, she had observed the tournament from the sidelines. This year, she felt a profound connection to the court that had once been her stage.

“I was trying not to cry when I walked out,” Osaka said, her voice thick with emotion. “Last year, watching Coco play from the stands, I yearned to be back here. I doubted if I could return to this level of competition. Winning this match and being in this atmosphere means everything to me. Thank you.”

As Osaka moved across the courts, she looked every bit the champion in her distinctive outfit. Her green attire, embellished with bows, mirrored the lively spirit she brought to the game. Each powerful serve and strategic shot she delivered resonated with the energy of a player reclaiming her place at the pinnacle of the sport.

Balancing the demands of a Grand Slam with the responsibilities of motherhood is a challenge Osaka is embracing with grace. Reflecting on her journey, she shared a tender moment: “At night, my daughter didn’t want to sleep at her usual bedtime, so I had to hold her for a while. It felt like she picked the perfect day to stay awake. Moments like that are so precious to me. I can only hope for more.”
