Chandigarh/New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) bench headed by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel slapped a fine of over Rs 2,080 crore on the state of Punjab for not managing the solid and liquid waste causing environmental damage.

The NGT, in its judgment, has held that Punjab has failed to comply with the statutory deadline for pollution control measures since 2014.

Simultaneously, sewerage management and water pollution control devices have not been installed.

The NGT has asked the Punjab government to collect fine from the polluters.

The NGT said the environmental norms were largely not followed, leading to death and diseases and damage to the environment, while also not fixing accountability for the same.

Notably, last week, the NGT had directed the Rajasthan government to pay Rs 3,000 crore as environmental compensation for improper management of solid and liquid waste.

The NGT also directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay Rs 100 crore for inadequate management of liquid waste in Pratapgarh, Rae Bareli and Jaunpur districts earlier.
