Pawan Khera arrested by Assam Police at Delhi Airport

New Delhi: Congress Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera was arrested by Assam Police with the local assistance of Delhi Police from Terminal 1 of IGI Airport, Delhi on Thursday, Delhi Police said.

According to Delhi Police, a request was received from Assam Police for assistance in arrest of Khera in a case registered at Dima Hasao Police Station, District Haflong in Assam.

Based on the request, requisite local assistance was provided and Khera was arrested by IO concerned of Assam Police from Terminal 1 of IGI Airport, Delhi Police said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Khera, who along with other senior Congress leaders of the party had boarded the flight for Raipur to attend the party’s 85th Plenary Session was asked to deboard, a party spokesperson claimed.

“We are all on the IndiGo6E flight 6E 204 to Raipur and all of a sudden my colleague Pawan Khera has been asked to deplane. What sort of high handedness is this? Is there any rule of law? On what grounds is this being done and under whose order?” Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate tweeted.

All the leaders and senior leaders of the Congress also deboarded and staged protest. They shouted slogans against the BJP government.

Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Police came and said Assam Police has registered an FIR. Neither they are telling about the case nor about the FIR.”

Senior Congress leader and MP, KC Venugopal who was also present, in a tweet wrote, “Modi govt is acting like a bunch of goons by deplaning Pawan Khera ji from the Delhi-Raipur flight and preventing him from joining the AICC Plenary. ”

“Using a flimsy FIR to restrict his movement and silence him is a shameful, unacceptable act. The entire party stands with Pawan ji,” he said.
