Srinagar: A gunfight raged between the militants and security forces in the outskirts of Srinagar on Sunday, officials said.

Police said based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists, a joint cordon and search operation was launched in the Zabarwan forest area of Srinagar on Sunday.

“As the security forces reached a particular spot, the hiding militants opened fire, and the security forces also effectively retaliated, triggering an encounter,” they said.

“The encounter is underway,” police said.

“A joint police and security forces operation was launched in the Zabarwan forest area of #Srinagar based on specific intelligence about the presence of #terrorists. An exchange of fire ensued during the operation. Further details will follow,” Kashmir Zone police said on X.

This is the second encounter, which took place in less than 24 hours in Kashmir Valley.

On Saturday, a gunfight erupted between the militants and security in Rampora Sopore during a cordon and search operation during which an identified militant was killed. Search operations are still going on in the area.
