Srinagar: An unidentified terrorist was killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in the Akhal Khulsan forest area of Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army said on Saturday.

The gunfight erupted yesterday evening after a joint team of the Army and other security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

“Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the cordon while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised so far,” the Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said in a statement. It added that intermittent and intense exchanges of fire continued through the night and that the operation remains ongoing.

The identity and affiliation of the slain terrorists have not yet been confirmed.

This marks the second major encounter in Kashmir this week. On July 28, security forces killed three Pakistani terrorists associated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba in the Harwan-Dachigam forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar. The trio was allegedly involved in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
