Agartala: Tripura has received financial assistance of Rs 12.72 Cr so far under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Centre’s flagship rooftop solar initiative aimed at promoting clean and affordable energy at the household level, said the state’s power minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday.
Since the launch of the demand-driven scheme in February 2024, a total of 1,848 rooftop solar systems have been installed across the state, benefiting 1,859 families by providing them with access to renewable electricity and reduced power bills, Nath stated.
To support the adoption of rooftop solar in Tripura, the central government has provided support under the scheme, where all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections from their respective distribution companies are eligible to apply through the national online portal, with a simplified digital application process that allows households to directly avail subsidies and track installation progress.
He claimed that rooftop solar systems will significantly improve energy reliability for households and ease pressure on the conventional power grid, particularly in Tripura, which largely depends on power sourced from outside the state.
“At the national level, over 20.85 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed, benefiting more than 26.14 lakh families, with central financial assistance exceeding Rs 14,771 Cr.
The government estimates that installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households will generate about 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 720 million tonnes over 25-year,” Nath added.
With steady adoption underway, Tripura is gradually aligning itself with the country’s broader clean energy and climate goals through increased household participation in rooftop solar generation
