Lucknow: A youth was arrested for vandalising a statue in a Hussainabad temple on Thursday, a senior Uttar Pradesh police officer said here.

Police sources said the youth with vermillion on his forehead entered Lete Hue Hanuman temple and vandalised the statue.

“He was immediately caught by the devotees.

“Initially the youth said his name was Shiva alias Shivam, but when the police quizzed him he revealed his real name Taufeeq Ahmad,” a priest of the temple said.

Deputy Police Commissioner (West) S Channappa said the youth was in an inebriated state and it has been confirmed in the medical examination.

“He entered the temple and attempted to damage the statue of Hanuman and vandalised it,” he said.

He said a case under relevant section of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the youth at Chowk police station and he has been arrested. “Several agencies are quizzing the youth,” he said.

The temple administration is trying to replace the statue.
