Kolkata: West Bengal ruling Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee (MP) on Friday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials at the CGO Complex at Salt Lake in connection with an investigation into the coal smuggling case across the state, official sources said.

The ED, probing the money trails into the coal trafficking scandal of Eastern Coalfields Ltd at Asansol in Bardhaman, had summoned Banerjee, nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to face the ED officials at 11 am on September 2.

Banerjee had reached 15 minutes before 11 am at the CGO complex, where some five ED officials from New Delhi were camping to question the politician regarding the case.

Banerjee was questioned by the federal investigation agency twice in the coal smuggling connection.

The ED quizzed him on September 6, 2021, and March 21, 2022, in New Delhi.

However, this time the ED began quizzing Banerjee in Kolkata following a Supreme Court order.

Menoka Gambhir, sister-in law of Abhishek Banerjee, also has been summoned by the ED on September 5 at the same place.

Banerjee’s wife Rujira Banerjee was also questioned by the ED in relation to the scam.
