Heavy rains lash TN, Low Pressure becomes well marked

Chennai: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai city and its
neighbouring districts, as the Low Pressure Area over the bay became well marked on Friday.

The met office has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and adjoining districts and also issued a red alert for the day. The rains, which began last night, poured steadily
all through the night and its intensity gained momentum today morning around 0600 hrs as the system became well marked and started moving towards Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.

As the met office has predicted heavy rains in several parts of the State, holiday has been declared for educational institutions for the day in 29 districts of the State.

While schools and colleges were declared holiday in several districts, in some places a holiday has been declared for schools only.

A holiday has been declared for only primary and middle school in Tirupattur district.
As heavy rains pounded Puducherry, the territorial administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges for today and tomorrow.

The heavy rains, which has been battering the city and suburbs, left several areas waterlogged and the Greater Chennai Corporation authorities are making efforts to pump out the stagnated water.

Met office sources said the well marked Low Pressure Area lay centred over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of northeast Sri Lanka and the associated cyclonic circulation extended up to mid tropospheric levels.

It is very likely to move northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts till tomorrow morning.

Thereafter it would move west-northwestwards across Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and Kerala tomorrow and the day after.

Under its influence, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next three days from today and isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala and Mahe for the next four days.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal for the next 48 hrs.

Squally Weather with wind speed ranging from 40-45 kmph and gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, along and off South Andhra Pradesh, TN, Puducherry and Sri Lanka coasts, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area for the next two days.

From November 13 to 15, squally weather with wind speed of 40-45 kmph and gusting to 55 kmph is likely over Lakshadweep area, Maldives-Comorin area, Southeast Arabian Sea and along and off Kerala and adjoining south Tamil Nadu coasts.

Fishermen are advised not to venture in to these areas during these period.
