Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said his government is seriously thinking about implementing a Uniform Civil Code in the state.

“Certainly we are thinking very seriously about (implementing) the Uniform Civil Code. This has been the main manifesto promise made at all-India level of the BJP,” he told reporters here.

Different states are working towards implementing the code and set up committees in this regard, he said. “We (Karnataka) are looking into it and studying those aspects, and we will take a call on it.”

“As far as the BJP is concerned, it feels that it is desirable to have a uniform civil code,” Bommai added.

BJP-ruled states like Assam and Uttarakhand have expressed their intent to implement the uniform civil code.

Bommai also touched on this issue while addressing party workers in Shivamogga Friday.

He also spoke of removing the government’s control over temples. “I strongly believe that devotees should manage the temples. In the coming days, provisions will be made in that direction,” he said.

On the anti-conversion law implemented in Karnataka, Bommai said the Supreme Court itself has passed an order saying that forced conversion is a crime.

Prior to this order, some people were calling anti-conversion law as unconstitutional, but the apex court has negated that, he said.
