Srinagar: Army foiled Border Action Team (BAT) attack close to the Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, in which a Pakistani intruder was killed and five soldiers including an officer was injured, defence officials said on Saturday.

On Friday Prime Minister Narendra Modi had issued a stern warning to Pakistan and said Indian soldiers will crush terrorism with full force and the enemy will be given a befitting reply.

The BAT action was foiled in a thick forest area in Kumkari area of the Machil sector in Kupwara. The BAT is a small group of specialised Pakistani troops supported by militants and they usually target patrol teams or isolated posts across the LoC.

Defence officials said the BAT action was foiled by alert Indian Army troops this morning in Kumakari Machil in which a Pakistani intruder was killed.

“Five Army personnel including an officer were injured in the encounter. All the injured have been shifted to a medical facility,” they said. The operation in the area is still underway.

In Srinagar Army said that two soldiers have been injured and a Pakistani person has been killed in the incident.

“There has been exchange of fire with unidentified personnel on a forward post in Kamkari, Macchal Sector on the line of control. One Pakistani person has been killed while two of our soldiers have suffered injuries and have been evacuated. Operations are in progress,” Army Srinagar based Chinar Corps said in a post on X.

This is the fourth encounter in Kupwara in the last fortnight.

In the earlier three encounters six militants suspected to be foreigners and a soldier were killed.

Two days ago, the Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi visited forward areas in Kupwara and reviewed the security situation along the LoC
