Jammu: union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to “development through connectivity” as he flagged off the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express service, describing the occasion as “making new history.”
He said the rail link would establish an “unbreakable and direct connection” between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.
Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were also present at the inaugural ceremony held at Jammu Tawi Railway Station for the launch of the direct Vande Bharat service to Srinagar. Vaishnaw said that “a golden chapter has been added to the history of rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Among others present were Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana, Satpal Sharma, MLA Dr. Narendra Singh, Vikram Randhawa, and Yudhvir Sethi.
Senior railway officials, including Northern Railway General Manager Rajesh Kumar Pandey and Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar, welcomed the dignitaries. During the ceremony, cultural performances were presented by schoolgirls added to the celebratory atmosphere.
In his address, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw further noted that, in view of the overwhelming demand from passengers, a modern Vande Bharat train comprising 20 coaches, rather than the standard 8 coaches, has been introduced on this route.
Elaborating regarding the technical features and benefits, he said the train is equipped for the first time with “winterisation” technology, including heated windshields and a specialised heating system, ensuring uninterrupted operations in sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall.
The 267-kilometre journey between Jammu and Srinagar will now be covered in just four to five hours, significantly reducing travel time and providing a boost to trade, tourism, and the local economy. Following the inauguration, the minister inspected the Chenab Bridge and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station, and reviewed the progress of ongoing projects.
Regular Vande Bharat services will commence from May 2, with two pairs of trains operating six days a week. Train No. 26401/26402 (except Tuesdays) will depart Jammu at 6:20 am and arrive in Srinagar at 11:10 am, while the return service will leave Srinagar at 2:00 pm and reach Jammu at 6:50 pm.
Train No. 26403/26404 (except Wednesdays) will depart Srinagar at 8:00 am and arrive in Jammu at 12:40 pm, with the return service leaving Jammu at 1:20 pm.
A railway official said the direct service is expected to become a major attraction for tourists and will also serve as a fast and affordable lifeline for traders, students, and patients.
