New Delhi: Condemning publicity-seeking petitions, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking to restrain the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from using lotus or ‘kamal’ as party symbol in elections.

The Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice P B Varale said the petition had no merits and was filed purely to gain publicity.

The petitioner Jayant Vipat argued that since lotus flower is India’s “national flower,” it cannot be allotted to any political party as such an allotment is “a disgrace to national integrity.”

In 2022, Vipat had filed a civil suit on the issue. The suit was dismissed by the civil court in October 2023 over technical grounds.
