Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has once again set a benchmark in electoral gender inclusivity, emerging as the State with the second-highest electoral gender ratio in India.

With 1,43,36,133 female electors, women constitute 51.56% of the total electorate in the state. This exceptional gender balance translates into robust female voter participation, with 52.09% of total polled by women over total votes, a release said.

This notable achievement reflects the success of sustained efforts through targeted campaigns.

Kerala’s electoral gender ratio stands significantly above the national average of 946 female electors per 1,000 male electors, showcasing a progressive and inclusive electoral environment.

This milestone is not merely a statistical achievement but a reflection of Kerala’s ongoing commitment to gender equity and empowerment.

Women voters in Kerala have also demonstrated remarkable participation during the Lok Sabha General Elections 2024, with a voter turnout of 71.86% among registered female electors.

This figure highlights the enthusiasm and commitment of women towards strengthening democratic processes. Overall voter turnout in the state stood at 72.04%, significantly higher than the national average.

Kerala’s efforts in enhancing voter awareness, particularly among women, have been instrumental in achieving these milestones. SVEEP campaigns played a critical role in bridging gender gaps in electoral participation.

Outreach programs focused on empowering women, addressing voter apathy, and ensuring inclusive participation from all sections of society.

From awareness drives in educational institutions to community-level engagement, these initiatives ensured that no voter was left behind.

In addition to gender inclusivity, Kerala also set an example in ensuring representation of marginalized communities, including third-gender electors.

Despite their small numbers, with 367 registered electors, the focus on inclusivity underscores Kerala’s commitment to a truly representative democracy.

Kerala’s success story in electoral gender representation is not just about numbers but about breaking barriers and creating an inclusive democratic space.

These achievements stand as a testament to the collective efforts of the Election Commission, the State and Districts, civil society, and most importantly, the voters themselves.

Moving forward, Kerala continues to pave the way to adopt similar strategies and strengthen democratic participation across the nation.
