New Delhi: India is sending a team of burn-specialist doctors and nurses to Dhaka to treat the victims of the devastating plane crash, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced today.

“The team with necessary medical support are scheduled to visit Dhaka shortly to treat the victims.”, said the statement issued tonight.

“They will make an assessment of the condition of patients with recommendation for further treatment and specialised care in India as necessary.” the statement added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives in the tragic air crash on July 21 in Dhaka and conveyed assurances of support and assistance.

The Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara neighborhood killing at least 31 people, including 25 children, and injuring more than 170 others. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff due to a mechanical failure, military officials said.

The Chinese-made F-7 BGI jet took off from A.K. Khandaker Air Force Base at 1:06 p.m. local time (0706 GMT) for a routine training mission. Moments later, the aircraft experienced a technical malfunction.

The pilot attempted to steer it toward a less populated area, but the jet struck a two-story building on the school campus, triggering a massive explosion and fire. The pilot was among those killed. Authorities continue to investigate the mechanical failure that led to the tragedy.

The crash is being considered one of the deadliest in the history of Bangladesh. In 1984 a crash of Biman flight had killed 49 people.
