Sensor manufacturing common facility centre to come up in Kerala

Thrissur: A Sensor Manufacturing Common Facility Centre will be established in Kerala through a partnership between the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) and Keltron, under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

The proposed centre will be set up on Keltron-owned land in Mulankunnathukavu, Thrissur, Kerala Industries Minister P. Rajeeve said.

The decision was made following a meeting between Minister P. Rajeeve and S. Krishnan, Secretary, Union Ministry of Electronics and IT. The land, which is currently under liquidation, will be reclaimed and repurposed for the project, subject to approval from the High Court.

“With the expansion of C-MET and the establishment of the Sensor Manufacturing Common Facility Centre in collaboration with it, Kerala aims to pave the way for industrial development based on sensor technology,” the Minister said.

Keltron has prepared the project based on a proposal submitted by C-MET. For the expansion of C-MET, five acres of Keltron land will be handed over to the Union Ministry of Electronics. Additionally, liabilities of Keltron’s defunct subsidiaries may be addressed through this project.

The remaining seven acres of land will be used for the joint venture with C-MET to set up the Sensor Manufacturing Common Facility Centre. The envisioned project includes a Sensor Incubation Centre, Sensor Integrated Chips, and Electronic Components—all as part of a unified initiative.

This facility is expected to become a central hub for the growth of sensor-based industries and enterprises in the state.

The Industries Minister added that reclaiming Keltron’s 12.19 acres of land for industrial purposes is a well-conceived and effective proposal.
