Srinagar: An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday morning, police said.

The anti-militancy operation, currently underway in the Chotigam area of Shopian district, is being jointly conducted by local police, Army, and CRPF.

Kashmir Police Zone in a post on X said, “Encounter has started at Chotigam area of Shopian district. Shopian Police, Army and CRPF are on the job. Further details shall follow.”

This is the second gunfight in south Kashmir in last two days.

A brief exchange of fire had taken place on Wednesday evening at village Hadigam Kulgam when joint teams of forces launched an operation in the area following an input about militant presence. It is believed that militants managed to escape from the Kulgam village during the initial exchange of fire.
