Bengaluru: BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday called for urgent action from the Indian government to deport illegal Bangladeshis residing in India, demanding the immediate release of a Hindu monk detained in Bangladesh.

Bommai also called for the intervention of the United Nations to stop the growing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, which he described as “highly concerning and condemnable”.

Bommai raised alarm over the increasing infiltration of Bangladeshis into India, urging the government to seal the India-Bangladesh border to prevent further illegal immigration.

“It is time to take stern action and identify those Bangladeshis living illegally in India. They must be sent back to Bangladesh, regardless of the cost,” Bommai posted on X on Thursday, highlighting the need for swift measures to safeguard India’s borders and national security.

In addition to addressing the issue of illegal immigration, Bommai condemned the detention of the monk, calling it “improper and illegal.”

He expressed outrage over the denial of bail and the “inhuman treatment” of the monk, stressing that such actions reflect a dictatorial attitude by the current interim dispensation in Bangladesh.

“The Bangladesh government must release the monk immediately and stop the attacks on Hindus,” Bommai demanded.

Bommai also appealed to the United Nations to intervene in the escalating violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, warning that failure to act could jeopardise the peaceful relations between India and Bangladesh.

“The United Nations must step in to protect the rights of Hindus in Bangladesh. If this situation continues, the goodwill between the two countries will be at risk,” he stated.

In his statement, Bommai reminded Bangladesh of its historical ties with India, noting that the country’s formation was made possible with India’s support during its independence struggle.

“Bangladesh should remember that it was with the support of the Indian Army that it gained independence. The peaceful coexistence of both nations is essential for their mutual prosperity,” he said.
