Agartala: A local court in Agartala convicted a 35-year-old man in the city and sentenced him to suffer rigorous imprisonment of seven years in jail for outrage of modesty of his minor daughter.

The Additional District and Session Judge of West Tripura district sentenced one Rafik Miah (35) of South Ramnagar, in connection with the case of the POCSO Act registered at West Agartala women’s police station, to seven years of jail under sections 354 of the IPC and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

Special Public Prosecutor Pulak Debnath said in May last year, at night, convict Rafik outraged the modesty of his minor daughter while she was sleeping in a separate bedroom away from her mother. The victim’s mother woke up in the night and noticed that her husband was not with her.

She noticed that Rafik was in the room with her daughter and assaulting her sexually. When she objected to it, Rafik assaulted her and left the house. After returning home after two weeks, he set the house ablaze and threatened his wife to kill her along with the daughter, as the lady informed other members of the family of the matter.

However, braving all odds, the victim’s mother lodged an FIR with the local police station, and later he was arrested. Rafik admitted his fault during trial, and after a long trial, the POCSO court awarded him rigorous imprisonment for seven years.
