Washington: The United States has no plans to invade Mexico to target cartels in that country, US Vice President JD Vance said on Wednesday.
“No,” Vance told reporters at the Southern border when asked if the US military plans striking cartels in Mexico.
Vance pointed out that designating cartels allows the Donald Trump administration to deploy military resources.
“I am not going to make any announcements about any invasions in Mexico here today. The President has a megaphone to speak on these issues as he feels necessary,” he said.
Vance also expressed the hope that Mexican authorities will do their part of the job in countering cartels.
“We do not want negative relationship with Mexico. We want the Mexican government to help itself but also in the process to help the American people by taking these organizations seriously. If they do not, we will figure out what to do from there,” he added.
The Wall Street Journal newspaper reported last week that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth threatened Mexican officials that the US military is ready to conduct a military action if the problem of the collusion between drug cartels and the Mexican government remains unsolved.
