New Delhi / Hamirpur: In a proud moment for the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, a native of Heeranagar in Hamirpur district, has assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Indian Navy—one of the top-ranking positions in the world’s third-most powerful naval force.

Upon taking over the prestigious post on August 1, Vice Admiral Vatsayan paid tribute at the National War Memorial, saluting the bravehearts who laid down their lives in service to the nation.

The solemn ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter in the illustrious career of this decorated officer from Devbhoomi.

Hailing from the serene hills of Hamirpur, Vice Admiral Vatsayan’s rise to the top echelons of naval command is a matter of immense pride for the people of Himachal. His appointment is not just a personal achievement but also a reflection of the state’s growing contribution to the nation’s defence leadership.

An officer of exceptional merit, he has been honoured with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Nau Sena Medal (NM) for distinguished service. His career spans decades of operational excellence, strategic planning, and commitment to maritime security.

As Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he will play a key role in steering India’s naval strategy, modernisation, and operations—at a time when the Indian Navy continues to grow as a blue-water force with global reach.

The people of Himachal, especially the residents of Hamirpur, have expressed deep pride in the elevation of their son to this esteemed role.

Since a son of the soil from Hamirpur has risen to the helm of the world’s third-strongest naval force, it is not just a personal milestone but a moment that reinforces the state’s legacy of valour and service. The hill state, especially Hamirpur, is known as the land of the brave, with nearly every third or fourth person from the district either serving in the armed forces or being an ex-serviceman.
