LeT militant gunned down in Shopian encounter

Srinagar: Security forces gunned down a Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant in an encounter that erupted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday, Police said.

They said the encounter erupted at Baskuchan during a cordon and a search operation in the area following an input about the presence of militants.

“As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight”, police said.

One LeT militant identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Nowpora Baskuchan Shopian, was killed during the gun fight, a senior police officer said.

The slain militant was involved in several terror crime and recently had escaped from an encounter, he added.

One AK 47 rifle, incriminating materials and arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter.

“One militant Killed identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora Baskuchan Shopian, linked with LeT terror outfit. Incriminating materials, arms & ammn including AK rifle recovered. He was involved in several terror crimes and recently escaped from an encounter”, Additional Director General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said in a tweet.
