Election Commission freezes Shiv Sena symbol, name

Mumbai: The Central Election Commission has decided that Shiv Sena name and bow & arrow symbol cannot be used in the upcoming bypoll for Andheri East assembly constituency by the Uddhav Thackeray group and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde group.

The Commission has given this interim order on Saturday in the background of the by-election of the Andheri East Assembly Constituency in Mumbai.

However, the commission has clarified that they can be named Thackeray group or Shinde group .

The Commission has instructed both the groups to select their own symbol from the list of free symbols of their group and the Commission has instructed them to submit this information to the Commission by 1 pm on October 10.

Earlier, Shiv Sena’s Thackeray faction sought a four-week period from the Election Commission to submit the party’s 10 to 15 lakhs primary membership applications.

Thackeray group’s lawyer gave this information while talking to media.

The Thackeray group of Shiv Sena presented its side as per the instructions of the Election Commission regarding the election symbol ‘Dhanushya Baan’.

The affidavits of the national executive members have been submitted to the Election Commission and more than two and a half lakh party members will submit their affidavits, said Thackeray lawyer Sunny Jain.
