Buenos Aires: Wild card entrant Facundo Diaz Acosta clinched his first ATP singles title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Chilean third-seed Nicolas Jarry in the final of the Argentina Open on Sunday.

Diaz Acosta won 73% of his first serves and saved all six break points against him to prevail in an hour and 45 minutes on the outdoor clay of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

“This hasn’t sunk in yet,” said the Buenos Aires-born 23-year-old. “I’ve dreamed about this moment for a long time, working with my team and having my family to back me. It’s a dream come true that this happened in Argentina.”

The result is expected to catapult Diaz Acosta from 87th to 59th in the world rankings, which will be updated on Monday.

Jarry, who was seeking his fourth ATP title, lavished praise on his unheralded opponent.

“Congratulations, Facu, for this tremendous moment,” the 28-year-old Chilean said. “Enjoy it. I knew that we would meet on a bigger stage when we played against each other on the Challenger circuit a couple of years ago.”
