Washington: Spanish driver Carlos Sainz of the Ferrari team won the race of the 20th round of the Formula 1 championship, the Mexican Grand Prix, which took place in Mexico City at the Rodriguez Brothers Autodrome.

Sainz won the fourth Grand Prix of the “royal races” in his career and the second this season. Second place went to British driver Lando Norris of McLaren. Third place went to Monegasque Charles Leclerc from Ferrari, who showed the best lap.

Three-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull received two 10-second penalties for an incorrect behavior toward Norris. First, the Dutchman was penalized for forcing the Briton off the track, then the stewards issued Verstappen a penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. The Red Bull driver ultimately finished sixth. His teammate, Mexican Sergio Perez, finished 17th at his home Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who was competing in his 400th Grand Prix, left the track due to technical problems.

The top ten following the Mexican Grand Prix also included: 4. Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain, Mercedes), 5. George Russell (Great Britain, Mercedes), 6. Verstappen, 7. Kevin Magnussen (Denmark, Haas), 8. Oscar Piastri (Australia, McLaren), 9. Nico Hulkenberg (Germany, Haas), 10. Pierre Gasly (France, Alpine).

The next round of the Formula 1 championship will be held from November 1-3 in Brazil.
