Kolkata: BJP’s West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar on Tuesday said their party programme to organise ” Ganga Arati” at Babughat, the eastern part of the Ganga would go ahead this evening even after the Kolkata Police denied such permission.

The Kolkata Police in a letter to the BJP on January 9 clearly stated that it was not possible to grant such permission owing the rush of pilgrims for the ensuing Ganga Sagar Mela and ongoing G20 Meeting has already started in the city.

” On 10/01/2023 huge numbers of pilgrims are also expected to assemble.Your programme will cause massive traffic congestion and difficulties for the movement of pilgrims. Moreover the G20 summit has started in Kolkata from January 9 to 11. Besides this due to other regular commitments a large number of police will be engaged.”

” In view of this situation you are requested to defer your schedule programme and apply afresh after completion of the Gangasagar mela, 2023.” the Joint CP ( headquarters) letter said.

Meanwhile, the city police on Tuesday dismantled the pandal, which was erected at the Babughat by the BJP activist for the Ganga Arati.

BJP state president said they would carry on the programme, which is slated to be held between 4 pm to 7 pm.
