Srinagar: Senior Congress leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Dooru, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, expressed skepticism about the feasibility of implementing “one nation, one election” in a vast and diverse country like India.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the bill to amend the Constitution to implement “one nation, one election”.

Speaking to media persons in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday, Mir said that the idea is “impossible even to imagine.”

“Passing an order on ‘one Nation, one Election’ is not an easy task. India is a large and complex nation, and discussing such a proposal itself seems like a distant dream,” the Dooru MLA, who is also Congress Working Committee member said.

He added, “It is not as simple as the BJP issuing an order and making it happen. India is not a small state where a decree can be issued and implemented without extensive deliberation.”

Mir emphasized the importance of a thorough debate in Parliament, where the consent of all parliamentarians would be required.

“If all the members of Parliament feel that ‘one Nation, one Election’ is a genuine proposal and pass it, I will have no objection,” he said.

He also highlighted the necessity of consensus among political parties to move forward with such a significant electoral reform. “Even I cannot imagine how it would be possible to conduct one unified election in a country as vast as India without the agreement of all political parties,” Mir added.
