On Sunday, for the first time in India, doctors from Gujarat successfully completed two uterus transplants on the same day, in the same operation theatre. Both the recipients of the uteruses, 22 and 28-year-old, will now be able to give birth. It is noteworthy that the uteruses to both the women have been donated to them by their own mothers, and therefore, the uteruses which were once home to these women, will now give birth to their children as well.

Both the operations involved the participation of specialist doctors and a team of 60 supporting staffers, and 5 hours later, their hard-work brought out positive results. This accomplishment has been achieved by Ahmedabad’s Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKDRC). For the first time, the live coverage of the transplants was made by Gujarati newspaper, Divya Bhaskar.

The 22-year-old recipient did not have a uterus and vagina since birth, and the uterus of the 28-year-old recipient was underdeveloped, and therefore, could not give birth. Now, both the recipients will be under special care for the next 3 months so that their bodies do not reject the transplanted uteruses, following which both of them will go through the process of IVF or in-vitro fertilization to become mothers.

IKDRC Ahmedabad and its doctors became the first to gain success in uterus transplantation in a government/ semi-government hospital. Along with this, not only in India, but this is the first case of successfully completing the transplantation of two uteruses on the same day, in the same operation theatre, in the whole world.
