Unabated cold continues to grip Kashmir

Srinagar: Meteorological Department forecast of mainly dry weather over J&K during the next 24 hours even as unabated cold conditions continues to grip the Kashmir valley disrupting normal activities on Thursday, officials said.

Two weak Western Disturbances are going to hit Jammu and Kashmir on December 1 & 4. However, both WDs won’t produce any rain/snow, Kashmir weather, an independent weather observer Faizan Arif said.

He said the day temperatures are going to come down by a few degrees as clouds will cover the sky or hazy sunshine will prevail. At one or two places in higher reaches, light precipitation can occur, he added.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, continues to witness colder nights with minimum temperature having a low of minus 2.1 degree Celsius on Thursday which was minus 1.2 degree below normal during this time of the season. However, the day temperature was 0.7 degree above normal against 12.1 degree Celsius.

Thick fog coupled with haze engulfed the Dal Lake, Boulevard road, Nishat, Shalimar and other parts of the city disrupting normal activities on Thursday.

Tourist hot spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir continued to remain the coldest place in the Kashmir valley with a minimum temperature recorded as low of minus 3.8 degree Celsius on Thursday which was minus 0.4 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the year.

Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus 1.0 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Thursday which was 2.1 degree Celsius above normal during this period at the valley of meadow.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of minus 2.0 degree Celsius, Kukernag 0.2 and frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara recorded a low of minus 2.6 degree Celsius on Thursday, the MeT office said.
