Mexico City: Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in a letter to his American counterpart Joe Biden, denounced the “interference” of U.S. government agencies in Mexico’s domestic affairs, particularly their financing of an opposition-controlled non-governmental association (NGO).

During his daily press conference on Monday, Lopez Obrador presented a letter dated Aug. 16, in which he condemned the U.S. government for financially supporting a Mexican NGO, Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, which has been a vocal critic of his administration.

“This procedure is completely offensive and contrary to relations respectful of sovereignty,” the president wrote in the letter.

Lopez Obrador also reminded Biden of his consistent opposition to such interference and urged him to take action to halt the activities of the United States Agency for International Development that supports these practices.

“Hopefully I can do something to stop this grievance that threatens our constitutional principle of non-intervention and self-determination of peoples,” he said.

Lopez Obrador, whose term concludes at the end of September, has repeatedly raised concerns about the financial support the NGO has been receiving from the United States.
