New York/New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain in New York, in the first such high-level contact between India and the Interim Government, even as Dhaka has lodged a strong protest against remarks reportedly made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

EAM in a post on X said the discussions between the two focused on the bilateral ties.

“Had a meeting with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain of Bangladesh in New York this evening.

“The conversation focussed on our bilateral ties.”

Meanwhile, on Monday the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry lodged a strong protest against remarks reportedly made by Home Minister Amit Shah about Bangladesh nationals during his recent visit to Jharkhand.

A protest note was handed over to the Deputy High Commissioner of India in Dhaka on Monday.

Bangladesh termed Amit Shah’s remarks as “highly deplorable.”

The Bangladesh foreign ministry, through the protest note, conveyed its serious reservation, deep sense of hurt and extreme displeasure and called upon the Government of India to advise the political leaders to refrain from making such objectionable and unacceptable remarks, Daily Sun reported.

The foreign ministry also emphasised that such remarks, coming from responsible positions against the nationals of a neighbouring country, undermine the spirit of mutual respect and understanding between two friendly countries.

On Friday, Amit Shah threatened to deal with every single Bangladeshi infiltrator in Jharkhand by hanging them upside down after the potential formation of a BJP government in the poll-bound state.
