Colombo: Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has signed a gazette notice dissolving parliament, calling elections on November 14, media reports said on Wednesday.

The gazette has fixed the parliamentary election for November 14, and the new parliament will meet for the first time on November 21, the Economy Next reported.

According to reports, the nomination for the parliamentary election will begin on October 4 and end on October 11.

Dissanayake won the presidential election held on September 21 by obtaining approximately 5.7 million votes.

Sri Lanka’s parliament has 225 members, and the current parliament’s five-year term was supposed to end in August 2025, the reports said.

President Dissanayake was elected with 42 percent of the vote, the first time a president had been elected below 50 percent of the vote.

The current legislature had only three members, and after his resignation, another member was appointed to fill his vacancy.

Earlier on Tuesday, he appointed a cabinet of three, distributing 15 ministries among them, reports added.
