Prayagraj: Few pilgrims were reportedly injured during a stampede at Sangam bank on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya during Maha Kumbh, official sources said here.

Sources said that the incident took place around 2 am due to the heavy pressure of the crowd; however, it is yet to be confirmed by the Mela administration or police.

Sources said that the injured have been admitted to the central hospital. It is being claimed that relief and rescue work was carried out and the situation is under control.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to the people to offer prayers at the temple. Take a bath near the ghats of Mother Ganga; do not try to go towards the Sangam Nose. Many bathing ghats have been built for bathing; bathing can be done anywhere. Follow the instructions of the administration, cooperate in making arrangements, and do not pay attention to any rumours.

Meanwhile, the second Amrit Snan by the Akharas on the bank of the Sangam has been cancelled following reports of a stampede.

President of Akhil Bharatiye Akhara Parishad Mahant Ravindra Puri said that the decision of Amrit Snan by Akharas has been cancelled as of now due to a stampede near Sangam bank due to the heavy turnout of devotees. He said that situation can worsen if Akharas go there.

He said that further action will be taken as per the situation. He said that Amrit Snan could be held in the evening if the situation turns normal.

It may be noted that around 10 crore people were expected to take a bath at Kumbh on Mauni Amavasya. Keeping the situation in view, the Amrit Snan by the Akharas was preponed.
