Mexico City: After a phone conversation with her U.S. counterpart, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has decided to continue negotiating the tariff issue concerning the steel, aluminum and automotive sectors.

At her daily press conference on Thursday, Sheinbaum said while the conversation did not focus on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which will be reviewed in 2026, it did address issues in key sectors such as the automotive industry, as well as steel and aluminum exports.

“In principle, we continue to talk about trade and tariffs. Remember that we, in the case of the automotive (sector), have a very preferential situation for Mexico, although we would still like more … and we continue working on steel and aluminum,” she said.

It had been agreed that high-level meeting on trade attended by members of both governments, including Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, will be held on Friday, she added.
