The Jhelum river had crossed the “danger level” mark in Srinagar last evening, triggering fears of inundation across central Kashmir after two days of incessant rainfall.

Meanwhile, authorities today said the water level in the Jhelum river and its tributaries has started receding across Kashmir.

According to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, at 6 am on Thursday, the water level at major monitoring points showed a downward trend.

At Sangam in Anantnag, the gauge recorded 27.16 ft against the flood declaration mark of 21 ft, while at Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar, it stood at 22.08 ft (danger level 18 ft). Both stations reported receding levels.

At Pampore, the water level was 6.63 m against the 5 m mark, also receding.

The department said that most tributaries were also showing signs of decline.
