Chennai: Air Mauritius, the National carrier of the Island Nation, is on an expansion mode in India to further cement the existing trade, tourism and cultural ties between the two countries and achieve the pre-COVID target of 80,000 tourists arrival from India this year and stretching to achieve the target of 100,000 next year.
As part of this effort, the airliner will be launching weekly once direct flight from Chennai to
Maurutius next month, offering affordable tariff to the customers both in the economyclass-
that provides over 250 seats and business class in its A-330 aircraft.
The first flight from Mauritius will land here on April 12 and the return flight from Chennai
Airport will depart on April 13, with the facilities that included visa on arrival.
Talking to reporters here on Monday night, Mr,Laurent Recoura, Officer in Charge of Air Mauritius said “We are pleased to restart our operations from Chennai after four years of absence.
Mauritius and India share a special relationship that is built on the foundation of people-to-people ties. With its idyllic sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and thriving marine life, visitors can expect to relish in Mauritius’ natural wonders, as well as its rich
cultural heritage, which reflects its history and deep-rooted cultural ties with India.
Both countries are united by ancestry, language and geography.” Air Mauritius currently operates six times weekly from Mumbai and thrice weekly from Delhi”, he added.
With the proposed launch of Chennai-Mauritius direct flight, the strength will got up to ten
(Six flights from Mumbai and three from Delhi) and the airliner is betting big on South India travellers, including MICE, by eyeing for expansion in other Metros and Tier-Two cities in the country.
On tourist arrivals from India, he said about 54,000 tourists from India arrived in Mauritius during the calender year 2023 and our objective to achieve 80,000 tourist arrivals this year, returning to the pre-Covid numbers.
“We are planning to target one lakh tourist arrivals from India next year”, he added.
Stating that the airliner would be gradually increasing its connectivity from India, he said
it would be eyeing for launching connectivity from Tier-2 cities like Maharashra, Pune,
Nagpur, Ahmedabad and from South India ciries like Coimbatore, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
As part of attracting more tourists from India, Mauritius will be adding additional 2,400 hotel rooms this year adding to the existing 13,00 rooms spread over 112 hotels.
