Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, on the sidelines of the D-8 ministerial meeting in Cairo, during which they discussed the situation in the Middle East, including the Gaza conflict and the latest developments in Syria, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

“The Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers reviewed the latest regional developments, focusing on the current situation in Gaza and the continued atrocities by the Zionist regime against the people in Palestine and Lebanon. The two top diplomats specifically highlighted the regime’s aggression against Syria, targeting the country’s defense and economic infrastructure,” the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

The parties also stressed the need for consultations among major Islamic countries, particularly D-8 member states, to stop Israel’s hostile actions and to ensure stability in the region, the statement added.

The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation was founded in 1996 to promote cooperation among Muslim states and protect the interests of the Islamic world. The organisation includes Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, Nigeria, and Egypt.

The main goals of the organisation are to strengthen political, economic and cultural ties among its members, as well as to support peaceful resolution of conflicts and protect the rights of Muslims in different parts of the world.
