Srinagar: A gunfight broke out between militants and security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, police said.

The encounter erupted at Poshkreeri area when joint forces were carrying out a cordon and a search operation following an input about militant presence.

“As the joint team of forces were approaching towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon them, triggering the gunfight,” a police officer said.

Additional forces have been rushed to the area to ensure that militants don’t manage to break the cordon.

This is the second gunfight in south Kashmir in the last 24 hours.

On Monday a brief gun battle broke out in Shopian district. The militants, however, managed to escape and the operation was called off Tuesday after no further contact.
