Morocco upset Argentina amid chaos in Paris Olympics opener

Paris: The men’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics kicked off with a dramatic and controversial upset as Morocco triumphed over two-time Olympic champions Argentina with a 2-1 victory in Saint-Etienne on Wednesday, July 24.

The opening match was disrupted by an extraordinary incident when a pitch invasion by fans halted play for nearly two hours.

The chaotic scenes unfolded after Morocco had taken a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a brace from Soufiane Rahimi, who scored just before half-time and then converted a penalty six minutes into the second half.

Giuliano Simeone managed to pull one back for Argentina in the 68th minute, sparking a tense final phase of the game. The tension peaked in the 16th minute of added time when Christian Medina appeared to have scored a dramatic equalizer. However, the goal was met with a pitch invasion by Moroccan fans protesting the decision, resulting in officials clearing the stadium.

With the stands emptied, both teams returned to the field to complete the match behind closed doors. Amid the confusion and high stakes, VAR reviewed Medina’s goal and ultimately disallowed it for offside, sealing Morocco’s stunning victory.

The disruption and the subsequent VAR decision have ignited debates and controversies, overshadowing what was supposed to be a celebration of football. Argentina, fresh off winning their record 16th Copa America title, now faces a challenging path forward in the tournament after this unexpected and tumultuous start.
