Turkey’s carpet industry is the oldest in the world, with carpets being made in the country for around 9000 years now. This year, within a mere six months from January to June, carpet trade worth 10.76 thousand crores was made in the country. Turkey’s carpets, made out of silk, wool, and cotton, are renowned all around the globe. The women of Turkey, especially, start making carpets from young ages, because this has been included into the school curriculum of the country.

Therefore, women here play the roles of both artisans and weavers, in whose hands, this industry is flourishing even more with each passing day. One weaver family in the country is engaged in drying up carpets on an area of 100 acres of land, where around more than 20 thousand carpets get prepared at once. Every year, tourists visit Turkey to witness this humongous procedure of carpet-making in the country.

Turkey accounts for more than 65% of the world’s machine-made carpet production and more than 60% of them are produced in the southern province of Gaziantep. The country, further, is aiming at surpassing China as the leading exporter by increasing exports and the sales of handmade, machine-made, and tufting machine-made variant carpets. The carpet and rugs market of Turkey is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 10.3% by the year 2027.
