Two militants killed as forces foil infiltration bid in Kupwara

Srinagar: Security forces foiled an infiltration bid by killing two unidentified militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday, Srinagar based defence spokesman said.

The bid was foiled in Machil sector of the frontier district.

The spokesman said the troops along the LoC were put on a high alert on May 1, following a a specific intelligence input provided by Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara of likely infiltration from one of the launch pads.

He said a well coordinated counter infiltration grid was put in place in the rugged and extremely difficult area.

“A number of additional ambushes including those of Indian Army and SOG ( J&K Police’s elite counter insurgency unit) were placed along the likely routes of infiltration. The alert troops in ambushes braved continuous bad weather marked by incessant rainfall, poor visibility and significant drop in temperature for two consecutive nights. Early morning on May 3 at around 8.30 AM, terrorists were sited by the troops having infiltrated onto own side of the Line of Control. Intense fire fight ensued resulting in elimination of two terrorists,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said bodies of two miltants have been recovered along with two AK series rifles, magazines and huge quantity of war like stores.

The identity and the group affiliation of the slain militants was being ascertained.

Army said further extensive search of area is under progress..

The spokesman said this successful intelligence based anti infiltration operation was yet another example of close synergy between Indian Army, police and all agencies.

“The security forces stand steadfast to defeat the nefarious designs of inimical elements supported by our adversary to disrupt peace and harmony of the area,” he added
