Barcelona: Australian rugby league player, Liam Hampson, has been found dead in a nightclub after going missing on a trip to Spain.

Hampson had been travelling around Europe with friends including National Rugby League (NRL) players. He was reported missing earlier this week, local media reported.

The 24-year-old, who played in the Queensland Cup for the Redcliffe Dolphins, had separated from his friends when leaving the Sala Apollo nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday local time, his family said on social media.

The family expressed their thanks to the group of friends travelling with Hampson – which included several top-tier players – who had searched for him when he went missing.

Barcelona police said that the nightclub employees found his body on Wednesday.

Police believe that it is an accidental death after falling from a height of about 10m.

“Liam had a heart of gold… words cannot express our grief,” Hampson’s father wrote on social media.
