As far as developmental activities are concerned in the country, south India is ahead of north India, and this can be justified with the fact that Tamil Nadu alone, is spending an amount equivalent to what is being spent by Rajasthan and MP together on development. While MP is spending 0.64 lakh crores, Rajasthan is spending 0.96 lakh crores, and Tamil Nadu is making an expenditure of 1.94 lakh crore rupees. It is noteworthy that the population of all the three states is almost in the same range, between 6.79 and 7.33 crores.
These numbers have been revealed by the RBI’s recently issued yearly handbook of statistics on Indian states. As per the same, the highest debt is being carried by the 10 states which are home to about 64% of the country’s population. There is a debt of a total 70 lakh crore rupees on the country, out of which half, that is 35 lakh crores is on these 10 states, which include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Uttar Pradesh is in the worst condition with a debt of 6.53 lakh crore rupees. At the same time, Maharashtra collects the highest tax revenue at the state level in the country.
