CBI freezes 50 ‘benami accounts’ unearthed in Birbhum district

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday summoned the manager of a cooperative bank at Seuri, Birbhum, a day after unearthing nearly 150 bank accounts, of which the agency told the bank authorities to freeze at least 50 of them, official sources here said.

The federal agency, probing the cattle smuggling scam and the alleged involvement of Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, on Thursday searched the Cooperative Bank, Seuri Branch, and reportedly unearthed some 150 benami accounts.

Of them, at least 50 accounts signed by the same person, have also been found by the probing agency.

The raid was conducted on the day when cattle smuggling prime accused Anubrata Mondal was

produced before a CBI court, Asansol, which remanded the TMC’s Birbhum district president for another three weeks up to January 19.

The CBI summoned the bank manager asking him to appear on Friday regarding the bank functioning

of 150 benami accounts.
