Chennai: Bestowing a renewed stimulus to the growth of the Southern landscape of India, the state-of-the-art NITB AAI Chennai Airport–New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) Phase-1 was today inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The new Integrated building spread over 2,20,972 sqm area, is envisaged in two phases at a cost of Rs 2,467 crores and will to cater to the ever- increasing passenger traffic.
Mr Modi also went round the new terminal and had a look at the modern amenities and facilities it offers for the benefit of passengers.
The new integrated terminal building at the Chennai International Airport will be an important addition to Chennai’s infrastructure, besides boosting connectivity and also benefitting the local economy, Mr Modi said.
In a tweet both in English and Tamil, the Prime Minister said it is also a reflection of the Union government’s commitment towards providing high-quality infrastructure to travellers.
He said “The new integrated terminal building at #ChennaiAirport, spanning an area of 2,20,972 sqm., is set to cater to the growing air traffic in the state of Tamil Nadu. It’s also a reflection of the govt.’s commitment towards providing high-quality infrastructure to
travellers.”
“This will be an important addition to Chennai’s infrastructure. It will boost connectivity and also benefit the local economy”, he added. The New Integrated Terminal Building (Phase- 1) of the Chennai International Airport is developed at a cost of Rs.1,260 crore.
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia tweeted “A consequential day for the Gateway of South India!”
“This will give an impetus to air connectivity and strengthen Chennai’s mark on the Indian #aviation map”, he said. The addition of this new Integrated terminal building will increase the passenger serving capacity of the airport from 23 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) to 30 MPPA.
Officials said the new terminal is a striking reflection of the local Tamil culture, incorporating traditional features such as the Kolam, Saree, Temples, and other elements that highlight the natural surroundings.
